“Overcoming Barriers: Effective Communication Through a Professional Interpreter” is designed to equip service providers with the tools to successfully utilize an interpreter to enable effective communication with patients and clients.
Good communication is the key to good healthcare, but communicating with patients who have limited English proficiency and are from other cultures can present challenges. Overcoming Barriers is designed to turn language and cultural barriers into inclusive opportunities and ensure you are providing your patients with the best care possible.
As a participant in Overcoming Barriers, you will learn:
- Awareness: what creates barriers to clear communication & how professional interpretation can help
- Information: interpreter pre-session, code of ethics, roles of the medical interpreter, modes of interpreting, healthcare and culture
- Skills development: choosing an appropriate interpreter, recognizing the signs of professional vs. unprofessional interpretation, working effectively with a trained interpreter, recognizing “cultural bumps” which create barriers to effective communication
